The Summer of '89

Way back in time, many years ago, before Kareoke in The Buck, before wives, before children, before staggages in general , the streets of Driffield were overun with oversized groups of lads.  It was the era of the denim shirted 'lager lout' and, not to be outdone in any way, Driffield boys were often decked out in there own 'Driffield Lager Lout' T shirts ( a prize to anyone who still has theirs - and can fit into it ! ) There was in fact a limited edition of this shirt which had the lager glass actually filled in ( as oppose to being just white - Sid Blakeston, I recall) - or was this just bollocks?

Saturday nights were particularly active with proceedings commencing in the Norseman at 6ish for happy hour, then Traceys Bar for happy hour, nipping next door to the Viking perhaps, down to Charlie D, Ferret etc finishing up at Odins and Carson's disco.

Virtually any 'outsider/ squaddie' daring to venture into the Capital of the Wolds during these troubled times would invariably leave hurridly with varying degrees of bodily damage, bloodloss or if they were lucky, just a smashed windscreen or other car damage.

The photo above was taken one saturday evening, late summer outside the soon to be opened premises of Lances which soon became a favourite drinking venue - at least for a year of so. I believe Seamus Owbridge took it and the quality may be a little ropey but the original photo was very dark. See how many 'friendly' faces you recognise of the 24 youths in question ( as an addendum to this page I have added the names of the people involved -just hover yer mouse over the photo, let me know if I've got any wrong or if you can fill in any gaps.)

Below are a couple more pics taken at around the same time, not on the same evening, but strangely in, and outside The Buck - the first was probably a saturday night( note 'female' in background who's table we'd invaded ) the second, was a sunday evening and I seem to recall that we were outside to witness a fracas of some kind ( but, given the over 20 years that have elapsed, my memory escapes me a tad.)
